The new "Scrolls Bass Odyssey" effects pedal from EarthQuaker Audio is a versatile, modern tool for bassists who want to shape their sound down to the last detail. It was developed in collaboration with Japanese bass sound master Kentaro Nakao (Number Girl) to process the natural input signal of any bass, effortlessly recreating the sonic character of a wide range of bass and amplifier combinations – from warm vintage sounds in the style of classic Motown recordings to powerful, modern metal tones. Sonically, the Scrolls Bass Odyssey impresses with a broad range of characteristics: The sound is analog, punchy, and articulate, with a dynamic response and a pleasing, tube-like warmth. The pedal allows for flexible and precise shaping of the sound at all times, enabling both subtle nuances and radical tonal transformations. At its core is a powerful drive channel modeled after classic tube amplifiers. Dedicated Blend and Bandwidth controls allow for precise adjustment of the distortion's intensity and frequency distribution. This is complemented by a high-quality EQ channel with active, audiophile-grade tone controls for precise fine-tuning. Three intuitive push-button switches provide quick adjustments in live or studio settings: "Deep" boosts the low frequencies at 80 Hz for rich, clear bass. "Process" creates a mid-cut for a modern, assertive sound, while "Bright" emphasizes the high frequencies at 5 kHz, adding attack and presence to the tone. An integrated effects loop, positioned between the Drive and EQ sections, offers additional options for incorporating external effects. Furthermore, the pedal features an always-on, buffered parallel output that sends an unaltered signal to other devices. For maximum flexibility in the studio and on stage, the Bass Odyssey is also equipped with a balanced XLR output, including analog speaker simulation. This makes it ideal for so-called "ampless" setups, where you play directly into a mixing console or audio interface. While guitarists have often expressed a degree of disdain for solid state amplifiers ever since their inception, bassists have always been more open-minded about these transistorized beasts. And while there have been quite a few famous solid state bass amps over the years, none are as legendary and storied as the original Acoustic 360 preamp. The Phil Jones Bass PE-5 was designed for bass guitar and upright bass and incorporates a sophisticated 5-band EQ and also offers superior function as a preamp, direct box, and signal booster. The PE-5 is engineered with a unique switchable input impedance which allows the pedal to match exactly to either a magnetic or piezo pickup. It achieves the full band spectrum for either pickup source. In addition it is a signal booster which compensates for low output pickups and will also provide ample drive for any amplifier. The input level and gain controls are designed to precisely match the pickup output to an amplifier. The line output is strong enough to use directly into a power amplifier or a powered speaker. The 5-band EQ is a high precision equalizer which means that each boost or cut level is identical to each adjacent band. Plus the Q factor of each band is identical. This makes it far easier for the player to accomplish the tone that they are pursuing. These frequency bands were carefully chosen for the voice of a bass so that the user will be able to adjust the EQ rapidly to get the desired sound.
